Bavarian Bliss

I booked my annual leave this year in the last two weeks of July. I went to Germany with my son. We chose the small resort town of Mittenwald for no other reason than the hotels in this town appeared to have some pretty good prices. But later some nicely surprising reasons to chose Mittenwald as a holiday spot began to reveal themselves. We flew from Dubai to Munich Airport and then hopped on the Deutsche Bahn S8 from Munchen Terminal to Munchen Pasing station, 40 minutes. After that we switched trains to a regional train - more comfortable seats, lots of room for our holiday luggage and a nice scenic ride through the Bavarian Alps - which stopped at about 15 places and in about two hours we arrived at Bahnhof Mittenwald. We chose the Gaeste Haus Doering which is a boutique hotel with around 12 rooms, about 5 minute taxi ride from the Bahnhof, six euro. Gaestehaus Doering is situated at the base of Mount Karwendel, the highest of the range in the area. It is also situated a few steps from the fast flowing icy mountain river: the Isar.

When we chose Mittenwald, we deliberately decided not to rent a car because everything is very close - all the major hikes into the mountains, and to the lakes began within 10 minutes to half an hour from the doorstep of the Gaestehaus Doering, literally.

There is a REWE Supermarket about ten minutes walk from the Gaestehaus Doering and this was a relief for us, having not read the fine print which stated that breakfast was an extra 7.50 Euros per day, but I am like that, sometimes - I neglect to read the fine print. Now we know why they have the lowest price for rooms in town. Anyways the choice is there to buy ones own groceries and provide for not only breaky but the rest of the meals every day because each room has a built-in kitchenette.

Our room had a roomy balcony. We were on the ground floor so it was more of a deck area and quite big - good for hanging laundry and hanging out, checking Instagram and Facebook after a good day's hike. The weather cooperated perfectly with temps during the day in the mid twenties and in the evening dipping to mid teens, really very pleasant. We left the balcony door and window open all the time and as a result we had some flies to contend with. But we overcame. We became very successful fly hunters, using kitchen towels and tourist brochures as weapons.

Beds are comfortable, the furniture is basic but also comfortable. And as we were using this room as a base for all of our daily outdoor activity, it was all we really needed.

And that is what makes Gaestehaus Doering a good choice among its competitors. Deliberately and well thought out, I'm sure, the right balance of location, comfort, and price as base from which to experience the main outdoor attractions of Mittenwald. On that basis I would recommend Gaestehaus Goering as a very pleasant place to stay at a very good price for family, with the attractive option of keeping holiday costs down by preparing all your own meals, including breakfast, in the handy kitchenette in the room.

The owner of the Hotel is very hands on and with her staff of two they run a very clean and customer service oriented hotel. How very Bavarian of them....
